Why Read This Book?
I found the book, Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver to be very interesting. There are quite a few reasons I would recommend it to someone else, or reasons why I read and enjoyed it. Some are it had a good message/plot, it had good reviews, it kept my attention, and was very relatable. First of all it had a good message and life lessons. The book had many passages where Sam, the main character talked to us, the readers. She talked about what she was learning from the events in her life. A lot of the topics she talked about, and her ideas on life were very inspirational. From following her from her life lessons such as, help out others, be nice to everyone, do not judge a person by their appearance, and the beauty of life. At some points I found myself tearing up a little because the message was so strong. It really pulls at your heart strings and makes a person think about their life and improvements they could make.
The Second reason I would recommend this book is it had good reviews. Before I chose the book, when I was looking for one I checked out some reviews. When looking through some, I came across this one…”I am in awe of this author’s talent. I hated this book, and loved it. It’s cruel, and frustrating, unfair, and yet it’s also sad, and hopeful, and honest and authentic.” -(Heather http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6482837-before-i-fall) This review really made me curious to see what the book was really about. Other reviews were similar, they said how much they did not really like the characters, but because the characters were so unlikable the book really taught a lot. Other reviewers had said that other people told them it was a good book, and worth reading, which I would agree with. Also, I remember my librarian from middle school doing a review/book talk about Before I Fall. She told us it was a good read and would teach us a lot about high school. Along with the positive reviews there were some negative ones, which made me want to read the book even more. Just to be able to read and see what the reviewers were talking about also persuaded me to read the book. I feel you should read the reviews as well, and really consider reading this book!
Next, I also think people should read this book because it is super interesting and keeps your attention the whole time. There were times when I had to put down the book to go do something else, but it was so hard to put it down. There is constantly interesting events going on and questions you need to find answers to. When the next chapter would come along and it was another day in her life she was reliving it was especially hard to put down. I felt I needed to see what she changed in that day she relived and how it affected her. There were so many characters and each had their own story to follow. That also made it hard to put down because there was constantly someone’s story to build on and find out new elements to the story. Every once in a while events and parts of the story was repeated but in between new ideas were added. There was always a new secret being found out and it had a big significance to the story. All together the book was very interesting and kept my attention the whole time. The author definitely did a good job at writing in a style that kept you wanting more.
Lastly I would recommend the book Before I Fall because it is very relatable. Since I am in high school and so are all of the characters it was very easily relatable to the high school life. There were so many different characters so each of them could relate to different people I know of in my high school. All of her strong messages are very relatable too, like this one…“It's weird how much people change. for example, when I was a kid I loved all of these things..and over time all of them just fell away, one after another, replaced by friends and IMing and cell phones and boys and clothes. it's kind of sad, if you think about it. like there's no continuity in people at all. like something ruptures when you hit twelve, or thirteen, or whatever the age is when you're no longer a kid but a "young adult," and after that you're a totally different person. maybe even a less happy person. maybe even a worse one.” (Oliver 226) This reminds me of high school and how times our changing and everyone has moved on and little things in life are not seen as much as they should be. Also when Sam talks about how you only have one life and she thinks, why not take regrets, say what is on your mind, be yourself and get out in the world, that really makes me think of the way I hope to be. The normal high school problems the students faced daily was easy to relate to, for they were all average teen problems. Since the book is very easy to imagine in your own life it kept it very interesting and easy to read. All in all I really enjoyed the book and recommend teens to read it. The book can really make you think of your life in general and see way to change for the better. I can honestly say no book has had an impact on me like this one.
